Sandstone hills and gravel ridges are found in small areas south of the main chalk ridge which runs along the middle of the Island. This landscape is good for farming, but it also holds some of the Island’s secrets. You will find areas of heathland and sunken lanes or shutes. The whole area has an intimate and secretive feeling. The most famous marker for this landscape type is the neolithic (stone age) ‘Longstone’, which marks the former entrance to a long barrow, situated on a sandy hill at Mottistone.
