Traffic & Transport - Introduction

The highways network provides access to the diverse landscapes across the AONB. It provides the means for transporting goods and to access many services for people who live and work in or visit the area.  Public Rights of Way on the Island offer an unrivalled opportunity to experience the qualities that led to AONB designation by walking, horse riding and cycling. The Isle of Wight Council was acknowledged as meeting the ‘national target’ for Rights of Way in 1998. It was the first local authority to do so and to date, it is still the only local authority to have received this accolade. The highway authority is charged with the maintenance, protection and management of the highway network.
